About Us
The NWT Seniors’ Society is a non-government organization (NGO) dedicated to helping seniors. As an advocacy body we work towards quality of life for seniors, elders and older adults in the NWT. Incorporated in 1983, we have over fourty years of experience in advocating issues important to seniors’ and providing information and services to seniors across the NWT.
The Society Board of Directors is made up of seniors from the regions and communities that are members of their local seniors’ organizations or that the community supports to represent seniors. Seniors helping Seniors.
The NWT Seniors Society employs two staff that work with the Board of Directors to advocate on behalf of all seniors. Housing, health care, medical travel, income and poverty are our major areas of interest based on the information we receive from seniors in communities and on our Senior Information Line.
In the Northwest Territories, the NWT Seniors’ Society promotes seniors’ right to:
- Information and freedom of expression
- Independence
- Privacy
- Respect and dignity
- Continuity
- Safety and security of person or possessions
- Responsibility and participation
- A life free of abuse and violence
through our Charter of Rights and Freedoms for Older Adults.

About Our Advocacy & Services
Information Line
Senior Information Line where seniors can call in for information and referrals on all issues facing them. If we don’t have the answers, we will find them. Seniors can call 867-920-7444 in Yellowknife or Toll-Free in communities 1-800-661-0878. They can also email admin@seniorsnwt.ca or ed@seniorsnwt.ca for information and referrals.
Train the Trainer - Elder Abuse Prevention Workshop
We support people in communities by delivering an annual Train the Trainer Elder Abuse Prevention workshops to facilitate elder abuse prevention. As part of the program, we mentor new facilitators.
Special Projects
We take part in special projects such as our recent one Alzheimer’s and Dementia Town Halls in small communities, where we travel to the community and provide information about the disease, supports available and the lived experience of families and caregivers.
Support
We provide advice and support to elected officials and governments on issues important to seniors.
We work with Pan-Canadian and local NGOs on issues.
Annual General Meeting
We host an Annual General Meeting once a year, where members can influence the priorities of the Society and volunteer to become a member of the Board of Directors. . Membership is free for individuals. You must be 60 years or older to sit on the Board of Directors
